The widening gaps within many countries are beginning to worry even the plutocrats. A survey for the World Economic Forum meeting at Davos pointed to inequality as the most pressing problem of the coming decade (alongside fiscal imbalances). In all sections of society, there is growing agreement that the world is becoming more unequal, and that today’s disparities and their likely trajectory are dangerous. World GDP will grow 3.8 percent this year and 3.5 percent next year, compared to earlier predictions of 3.9 percent and 4.2 percent Europe GDP will grow 0.1 percent next year, compared to earlier predictions of 1.3 percent. Germany and France will enter recession US GDP will grow 1.4 percent next year, compared to earlier forecast of 2 percent. There’s a 1 in 3 change of entering recession. The MSCI Asia Pacific ex Japan index will hit 480 in twelve months, compared to earlier forecast of 530 Commodities may rally 20% on emerging market growth, though this is a downgrade from previous estimates. The 12-month copper target was lowered to $9,500 per ton from $11,000. Brent crude will average $120 next year, down from earlier estimates of $130.
World Bank president says world ‘one shock away from crisis’
Speaking in Washington and concerned over rising food prices and lingering instability in the Middle East and Africa, World Bank President Robert Zoellick believes the global economy is “one shock away” from a major crisis.
