One question I often get when explaining 3D-printing and the possible future transformation of production processes is the challenges for ordinary people to design and develop things. My answer usually turns out to be that everyone who develop things don’t have to design it from scratch, but just adjust or adapt an existing design slightly. And if there are many people just do small adjustment that we will have a flood if new designs very quickly. 

EndlessForms is a company that have developed a evolution based system for helping people grow their designs. Instead of doing your part and sends it to someone else, you can actually breed your designs yourself by mixing different 3D shapes in this evolution tool.

EndlessForms lets you start with a basic shape then evolve it by selecting simple variants or combining it with other shapes to create your ideal design. Users can then share and rate their designs on the site, allowing others to use them as basis for their own designs or request them to be 3D-printed in a variety of materials. Popular objects created on the site so far include a lamp, a mushroom and a butterfly, and each object’s page records its evolutionary history so you can go back and see how it was created.
