Forrester Bucks Wisdom on Cloud Computing | ITworld

A really interesting post which is debunking the (sometimes implicit) truth that large companies are not willing to place data or computing power outside their organizations - in e g the external cloud. Interestingly enough this is one of the strongest arguments to keep an internal IT-department in contrast to buy generic services from the outside.

To me who have spent many years in the 1990:s trying to fight this big company orthodoxy it is really interesting. In fact many large companies doesn’t anymore have a clear concept of what is inside or what is outside. Most of the important actually information follows the people who do the work who increasingly are external consultants, coming from small specialist firms or is much more mobile than ever.

This fact puts the idea of company security in a different light and maybe it is a sign that the values are shifting and it is much more important to keep down cost, make sure that people can collaborate and create value rather than maintaining the artificial façade of security in a world which is constantly changing and becoming more transparent and network like.

Or more bluntly: if the information you work with is turning up on Gmail somewhere anyway, what is the point of spending a lot money in running, administrating and protecting you mail system internally? Why not buy mail and office services externally for $50 per person and year and get rid of a large group of IT-people making your world a more complex place.

An interesting option…?

This development is strongly pointing towards a rapid death of the traditional IT-department - at least when it comes to generic services.
